Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Route Access by Charter Bus
Reaching All Three Kumano Sanzan Shrines Without Transfers: The One-Day Charter Bus Loop

Many travelers assume the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails connect Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha directly on foot. In fact, the three grand shrines are not linked by a single continuous walking path. When moving between them by road, the route runs through the city of Shingu, home to Hayatama Taisha.
- Hongu to Hayatama: about 34 km, roughly a 40 to 45 minute drive
- Hongu to Nachi: about 54 km, roughly one hour five minutes to one hour thirteen minutes by car
- Hayatama to Nachi: about 28.6 km
A chartered bus can connect all three legs in a single vehicle, with no transfers, no waiting for connecting services, and no need to carry luggage between stations.
Local Bus Routes to Kumano Sanzan: Schedules and Travel Times

Independent travelers can reach each shrine by rail and local bus, though the combined ride and transfer time adds up over a full day.
- From JR Kii-Tanabe Station: local bus services reach Hongu Taisha-mae in roughly one hour to one hour fifteen minutes, depending on the route taken.
- From JR Kii-Katsuura Station: a local bus reaches the Nachisan stop in about 30 minutes, followed by a 10 minute walk up to the shrine.
- From JR Shingu Station: a local bus reaches Hayatama Taisha in about five minutes, or roughly 15 to 20 minutes on foot.
Covering all three shrines this way in one day means stacking several bus rides and walks back to back.
The Reality of Large-Bus Parking and Drop-Off Points at Each Shrine
Around Hongu Taisha, large buses have a few options within a five minute walk of the Hongu Taisha-mae bus stop:
- The riverbed parking area: roughly 500 free spaces, open around the clock
- The Kumano Hongu-kan lot: 58 spaces, including room for two large buses
- The parking area in front of "Ki no Sato": about 40 spaces, including capacity for 10 buses, available from 9:00 to 17:00
At Hayatama Taisha, the main lot holds 31 regular cars and 4 large buses, with the Gongen-gawara riverside area opened as overflow parking during busier periods. At Nachi Taisha, the lot below the shrine office has 30 spaces and requires a toll for the shrine's private access road; it brings visitors close to the main hall, which suits travelers who have difficulty walking, though large-bus capacity should be confirmed with the shrine in advance.
Model Routes for Groups by Age and Fitness Level
For groups who want to limit walking, a Hayatama, then Hongu, then Nachi order keeps the longer uphill approach at Nachi for last, when the group can rest beforehand at Hongu's riverside grounds or the Hongu-kan facilities. Building in a seated rest near each parking area, rather than rushing between shrines, makes the day far more comfortable for older travelers. For a closer look at how a full pilgrimage day can be structured with meals and rest stops included, see our suggested model course page below.
Seasonal and Road Considerations
National Route 311, which runs through the Nakahechi section of the Kumano Kodo, has no winter closures, though the Koguchi pass near Doyukawa can see snow, and vehicles with winter tires are recommended on that stretch. For those planning to walk sections of the trail, spring and autumn are generally considered the most comfortable seasons underfoot. Traveling between the three shrines by bus, however, means the loop is practical in any season, since the vehicle handles the road conditions rather than the walker.
How to Arrange a Charter Bus for Your Kumano Sanzan Pilgrimage
A charter bus quote is built around your group size, departure point, and preferred visiting order, so pricing is not fixed in advance; you can request a tailored estimate through our online form. Because this is an escorted group trip coordinated with local parking arrangements and shrine staff, a Japanese-speaking party leader must accompany the group on board to communicate with the driver and the parking attendants at each stop. When you request a quote, our team can also help you think through how much time to allow at each shrine based on the parking and access notes above.
